7 Rooms of Drinks Heaven

As the markets have changed, and the demands differed – so have we, albeit with caution. Never ones to jump blindly onto bandwagons, our growth has been measured and considered – that said, we’ve found ourselves with not one, but 7 rooms of drinks heaven!

We live in an old building which leaves restrictions on expansion and changes, but that just suits us fine.

We’re now at a maximum capacity of seven rooms ranging from specialist wines such as Bordeaux and Burgundy, through to a unbelievable range of scotch (and world) whisky with a good measure of gin, rum and brandy in between.

Have a scroll through our “7 Rooms of Drinks Heaven” and for the true experience – come by and say hello. (We have hundreds of bottles open to taste…!).

Wine and Champagne

Wine from across the globe as well as specially selected wines from Rhône Valley, Loire Valley, Alsace and the South of France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, German & Austria, the rest of Europe and of course the New World too. We also have a great selection of fortified wines, dessert wines, sparkling wine and of course Champagne.

Select Champagne from the finest houses
We are very proud of our Champagne selection and now offer a fine mix of famous “houses” along with artisan growers. Every style imaginable is represented and across a complete range of price points. In addition, there is a stellar range of top vintages – including some of the greatest years going back 30 years! From feather light Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs to richer Pinot Noir and Meunier based blends; with a broad offering from the fashionable Rosé category.

Why a cellar dedicated to Burgundy?

Burgundy is the most terroir sensitive and complex viticultural area in France – with over 150 different AOCs! For many this is one of the most interesting, even romantic regions. It also, thankfully, remains one of the most unspoilt. The spiritual home of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes, few regions can compare to Burgundy for producing both dry white and red wines of world class, side by side.

For this, Burgundy certainly deserves it’s own dedicated space.

Celebrating Bordeaux

Along with Champagne, no other region has managed to build such an enviable reputation through the combination of the high-quality production and hard PR. The irony though is that less than 1% of the total number of estates and producers are driving the whole category and the top end image.

In addition, prices have risen exponentially for the greatest names and dragged up many others in their wake. We have focused on the challenge these days to strike a balance between sourcing iconic names and vintages, whilst searching out estates which offer the best price to quality ratio. Styles, also these days, often depend as much on the estates production philosophy and methods as their origins, so this approach has become increasingly more important for us.

Whisky Galore

It doesn’t seem so many years ago that we had just one whisky room – the addition of the second signalled the beginnings of a change in the drinks market, and we now have whisky galore.

Scotch Malt Whisky regions
Our first whisky rooms contains scotch whiskies from the traditionally recognised Scotch Whisky regions; Highland, Lowland, Speyside, Campbeltown and Island. (Don't worry - we have plenty from Islay, it's in room two!).

Whisky events
We hold regular tasting events for whisky, and try to visit the distilleries in person where possible. This gives us some great insight and background information for us to share. As well as core range, we often stock limited editions, travel retail and collectors bottlings.

Open to taste
For the true whisky connoisseur, or indecisive beginner, we regularly have more than 1,000 products open for sampling. Just make sure you have a designated driver please…!

…and more whisky…

Islay and World Whiskey. Two different things, but all sharing our second whisky room. Just when you thought the first whisky room made you spoilt for choice…

Islay Whisky
Our second whisky room includes an extensive Islay range, including some limited edition Ardbegs and hard to come by Port Ellen too. All of Islay’s distilleries are represented; Ardbeg, Bowmore, Bruichladdich, Bunnahabhain, Caol Ila, Lagavulin, Laphroaig and Kilchoman – with additional bottles from The Ileach and Port Askaig also.

World Whiskey
Other shelves are stocked full of whisky and whiskey from around the world; UK, Wales, Japan, Sweden, Canadian, Indian, Ireland and USA Whiskey too, with Bourbon, Rye and Corn Whiskey being available.

Deluxe Blends & Whisky Liqueurs
Not to be sniffed at, there are some fantastic blends available, such as the award-winning Ballantine’s 17 yo and Compass Box’s unique range. Whisky liqueurs are popular too, and we stock a range from distilleries such as Arran and Jack Daniel’s.

Glassware and miniatures
Most of our shelf space is full of whisky, however we do have some available space for glassware, such as Glencairn nosing glasses (both plain and branded), a selection of whisky miniatures and gift-sets.

Gin, Rum, Tequila, Vodka – but mostly Gin.

Gin
Who could have predicted the gin boom five years ago? We currently stock over 500 gins, including many from Yorkshire and Lancashire. (We like to support local!). Such is the demand, and growth, in gin we stock a global selection and have dedicated a room to all things juniper. As with our whisky room, we have a large number of bottles open to taste and are more than happy to give our recommendations on appropriate garnishes.

Rum
No longer reserved for sailors or pirates, there are some fine rums available. We stock many different styles – Jamaican, British, Navy – from many parts of the world. As the craft gin movement grows, we’re seeing more ‘local’ Rum too.

Tequila
South America’s distilled spirit doesn’t go ignored at the Wright Wine Company, and we have a small but perfectly formed selection of all things agave – with Tequila and Mezcal representing Oaxaca and Jalisco in Mexico.

Vodka
Not to be missing out, Vodka also has a home with us. Not your usual supermarket fayre though – we like something a bit different and specialist – milk vodka anyone?

Brandy

As well as housing Cognac, Armagnac, Calvados and brandies from around the world including many library vintages of the above, our brandy room is also home to our shop counter, behind which lay the main entrance door, many moons ago. Some of our longer standing members of staff also remember the main feature of this room being a large stone spittoon.

Cognac
As Cognac gains in popularity amongst millennials, largely due to the latest bar and cocktail trends, we continue to ensure that we stock a vast range of this brandy in all styles and ages, for all styles and ages. We’re particularly proud of our selection of Cognacs in decanter style bottles.

Armagnac
Often overlooked in favour of its more prestigious and perhaps better understood neighbour, Cognac, Armagnac is, in our opinion, not to be sniffed at. Au contraire, we fully champion Armagnac and the proof lies in our impressive range of library vintages dating back as far as 1934. These vintage brandies are Armagnac’s trump card and indeed a drink which some choose to consider “less refined” we prefer to see as more distinctive, more varied and definitely a drink to be explored.

Calvados
As well as an extensive range of Calvados, our brandy room continues the “locally sourced” theme where possible and displays cider brandy from Somerset in the UK. We take our apple (and pear) products as seriously as those of the grape and grain!
