Speyside
Speyside is home to roughly half of the country’s distilleries. The area stretches from the Moray coastline in the Highlands down towards the Cairngorms National Park.
Taking its name from the River Spey which winds through the area, many of its distilleries are located in the surrounding glens. The area is a beautiful landscape of open valleys and sheltered glens, and lush fields and a rich supply of pure water which help provide elegant and smooth whiskies.
Speyside whiskies are characterised by sweet and fruity notes, ranging from ripe pears to sultanas. Hints of nuts and malt are common, and some also possess a gentle, refined smokiness.
